He Said

“I have something I need to get off my chest,” she’d said. I could feel this knot tightening in my gut as she told me, as she explained what she’d done, trying so hard to justify her actions – perhaps to herself as much as to me. And as she reached the crescendo… the knot just evaporated. It was gone, like it had never been there. It felt like something inside me had just clicked, like maybe I’d been pushed so far in one direction I’d passed the knotting point.

I left. I had to. I couldn’t stay there. I don’t think I could ever go back, either. What she did was abhorrent, utterly unforgivable. But strangely I’m not angry with her. I’m perhaps hurt, but I don’t really feel anything else. I picture her face, and I feel nothing. I can’t begin to imagine how she feels. I don’t think I want to. She’s probably moved on already. Probably making the same mistakes with some brand new guy.

It’s strange when you think you know someone. When you think you have a future together.

I only hope I did the right thing.
