Life Lines

I waited for Lily to answer me. I had never thought about my future before. All my days had been the same, spent always with my parents, never allowed to go anywhere. And of course there was that lovely year spent in the tower and finding out about the reason why they’d put me in it.

Now that I knew the curse was a lie, my life – and my future – was suddenly mine again.

Lily put down the potato and sighed. “Give me your hand, child.”

I bristled at her calling me a child. She couldn’t have been more than a year or two older than me. Lily’s eyes looked into mine, knowingly. Oh, right, she could read minds. Oops! Meekly, I put my hand in hers.

She turned my hand over and looked intently at my palm.

“Um, what are you doing?”

“I’m looking at your life lines. They tell me your future.”

“What do you see?”

“I see a man who is looking for you, someone very dear to you. He is in grave danger. There is one who wishes you harm and will stop at nothing to find you, even if it means hurting those whom you love.”
