Decisions

I thought I’d seen him following us around the park. I brushed him off as just a creepy guy who happened to be going the same way as we were. He disappeared after we got to the duck pond, so I forgot to mention him to Mom.

Then he was here, knocking at our door, talking all business-like, being let in. He sat in my spot on the couch, UGH ! I looked at his bald spot right in the middle of his head with hatred. I mentally shot daggers out of my eyes at it.

Then he said Devon’s name, and I stopped staring started eavesdropping. He had proof her real dad was alive, and he would take us to court to get custody. My heart skipped a beat, then began to race. The blood rushed out of my face, then back in with heat and anger. Who does he think he is?!

I remember that night, my parents pacing, after putting Devon to bed and after I excused myself. They decided to call our lawyer and wait. I wanted to run, get her out of here, go somewhere else, anywhere!

But I just hid in the hall and listened, tearfully.
