The Capitalist Union 2

The bus pulled up, finally, and Jake and his friend Paul shoved Jeannie aside as they grabbed the seats in the front. Two of the Black kids walked by on their way to the back, and Jake recognized one from his class. “Hey, Mark, want to sit up here? There’s room across the aisle.”

Mark shook his head and continued back, glancing over his shoulder as he walked. Jake had turned, now talking to Paul. Jeannie and her friend Sadie plunked into the seats behind them. “Imagine if they fired a nuke at us right now!” Paul whispered, “They could hit us, my dad said, ‘cause we’re right on the Western tip here. They want Alaska back for the oil.” He laughed, “They sure must have felt stupid after they sold it to the US.” Jake nodded.

“Yeah, hey, was Alaska a state?” He wondered if that would be on the history quiz today. Fifth grade history was killer, all about the former United States.

“I hope not, I don’t even know 5 out of the 25 of them.” Paul shrugged.

Jake laughed, “There weren’t 25! There were 42!”
