Just A Little Over the Top

Him: What’s wrong?
Me: It’s 5 o’clock and I don’t have anything to make dinner with!
Him (confused): What?
Me: I need to go grocery shopping.
Him(looking hopeful):Couldn’t you just go out for dinner?
I shook my head. Me: Not if I want something for breakfast. Either way I have to get food. Do you know where the nearest grocery store is?
Him: yeah, but you’ll want a car.
I raised my eyebrows. Me: That far?
Him: No, there’s just a few creepers on the way you want to avoid. Plus this neighborhood is a labyrinth. All the houses look the same once you hit 105th street.
I paused. Me:What if I don’t have a car?
Him: I could drive you.
I had the feeling that’s what he wanted all along.
Me:Ok.
We scrambled over the rocks and pushed our way through the trees back to the park. I didn’t know where his house was so I let him lead me through the ‘back way’ which cut across some people’s yards. When we finally arrived at his house I sat down on the grass, exhausted.
Me:Was that second fence entirely necessary?
