I like the suspense buildup. “His neighbors were within days of realizing they had a monster among their midst.” Unleash the monster! (at the appropriate time, of course).

i like this a lot – good (and believable) internal monologue.

my only criticism: maybe you should’ve ended with “His feet went first.” – would’ve been more in keeping with the tone, i think.
