The Sun and the Rainfall
May 1995
Veronica walked down Electric Avenue, her red hair fluttering in the wind. Suddenly a dark-haired boy came up behind her.
“Hey, Veronica,” he whispered in her ear.
She gasped in surprise and whirled around to face him.
“Johny! What the hell are you doing here?” she asked loudly.
He was supposed to be in college now, and as far as she knew, his summer break didn’t start until next week.
“I wanted to see you, baby,” he said.
‘Why is he acting like this,’ Veronica thought, ‘We broke up a month ago.’
When he spoke she could smell the alcohol on his breath, and it bothered her.
“Please, Johny,” she protested. “Don’t stand so close to me.”
He ignored her request. “Come on, let’s go down to the club. Let’s dance,” he said.
“Johny, I really can’t…” Veronica started, desperately trying to come up with an excuse. A silver car drove by, and the breeze it created made their hair fly around.
“You look so pretty,” Johny said. “You want to go see a film?”
She smiled, “Alright.”
