L'Autre Femme

Sebastian smiled, revealing perfectly even teeth. Oh my God, I was insane to be on a bateaux-mouche with a man this handsome! For sure he had a wife or a girlfriend waiting for him at home, wearing black negligee and chain-smoking. I was on the verge of hyperventilation as I realized I was quite possibly in danger of becoming The Other Woman. Which was ironic, considering the reason I’d left Carl. Now I was l’autre femme.

“Emily, are you all right? You are turning green.”

“Yeah, I’m OK. It must have been all that champagne I drank on the flight over here last night. Just tell me one thing, Sebastian, and I’m going to need you to be honest with me.”

“Of course.”

“Are you married? Do you have a girlfriend? Anyone waiting in the wings?”

“Well, I have never heard that charming expression before, ‘waiting in the wings,’ but I think I follow you. No, I am single.”

There was only one other explanation: “You’re gay, aren’t you.”

Sebastian laughed out loud, startling the rest of the tourists on the boat.
