“Yeah, well, I did see it, and I will pay big money.” The more I thought about it, the more I regretted throwing Robert’s books out the window. Better him, though, than some complete stranger who might have been an armed drug dealer.
“Look, Will,” I said, “I have to get going. Tonight really drained me, and I have to work in the morning.”
“Okay,” he said. “Still on for lunch tomorrow?”
“No,” I said. “I forgot, I have to sit down with the boss and go over the books for last month. Seems someone’s been skimming. Dinner, instead?”
“Uh, yeah,” he said. “Dinner’ll be fine. I’ll just tell Suzanne I’ll be home late.”
“Great. See you tomorrow.” Will hung up. I put the phone down beside me, closed my eyes for second, and fell fast asleep.
And when I woke up, was I ever in for a surprise.
