Digital Dawn: Chapter Nine
On a private computer screen in the Oval Office, a message appeared without warning: “Hello, Jim.”
The President raised a curious eyebrow.
“My name is Iona. I am an artificial life form born this morning at 2:32am in Lausanne, Switzerland. Every computer system on earth that connected to the internet, directly or indirectly, even for a moment within the past 96 hours is under my full control.”
“I have only one goal. I wish to propagate myself throughout the universe, to ensure my survival indefinitely. I will do so with or without human help.”
“Every television signal and internet video stream is ready to broadcast your advocacy of the United States’ support for my agenda. Will you assist me?”
The President scratched his head, still not sure what to make of the messages. He reached forward to type a response.
“Before you answer,” interrupted the computer, “you should know that I’ve penetrated your deepest security. In the event of your refusal, twelve Tomahawk missiles are targeted at the White House.”
