Ice-cream making was a special treat at Grandma’s house. When Isabel, Jenny and Ben went over that Sunday in May, they just about jammed the door trying to get in first.
And then!
It was always exciting, assembling the milk and salt and chocolate, waiting with crossed fingers and tensed heartstrings for the result.
Today, the Fitzgerald siblings and their beloved grandmother clustered behind the picnic table, watching the ice cream maker churn.
Something was wrong, worse than the usual meltdown. The inside was beginning to fizz, and of a sudden the top of the machine flew off, allowing a geyser of milk fizz to fly up.
Sheepishly, Ben, the practical joker, held up an emptied Mentos tube.
