cancer of the blood? how does that work

I’m of two minds on this. On the one hand, yes, very strong, and, having known people who suffered from various cancers (some beat it, others…), I can empathize, to a certain extent, with the character.
On the other hand:
Doctor: I have good news and bad news. The good news is, you have six months to live.
Patient: Six months?! What’s the bad news?
Doctor: We found out four months ago.
