The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure - 35th Anniversary Unabridged and Annotated Edition (p.724)
I was already a cynical adult, and Jason, well, kids in the seventies were so much more jaded than when I was growing up let me tell you. Still, if you recall how traumatized I was the first time Wesley got killed (or was that the second?), you’ll realize I just couldn’t put myself through that again.
So I changed the ending. The cynical adult in me didn’t want the sugary sweet ending my father always gave me, but the kid in me didn’t want the dark Expressionist ending either. So I compromised and left it open ended, figuring I could always chalk it up to missing pages or something lost in the translation to English. So sue me.
