New Patient

Dr. Kinkaid walked into the doctor’s lounge. “Hey, Bill,” Dr. Chang said, sounding every bit as tired as Kinkaid felt. “How goes the battle?”

“Oh, God, Sara,” Kinkaid laughed. “You would not believe the guy they just brought in. About two, maybe three, hours ago, an ambulance arrives. The guy they bring in is beaten all to hell. Bruises, scratches, everything. Pretty much any kind of injury someone can inflict was there.”

“Bar fight?” Sara asked.

“Mm-mm,” Bill replied. “Self inflicted. But here’s the great part. The guy claims his shadow came to life and attacked him! Said it just jumped off the wall and…”

“Dr. Kinkaid?” Molly Sanders interrupted.

“Yes, Molly?”

“We have a… problem with the new patient. We’re not sure his wounds are self-inflicted.”

“The bite marks on his arms are from his own teeth, Molly,” Kinkaid said. “How could there be any doubt?”

“Well, that’s just it. All the bite marks on him match.” Molly looked confused. “But how could he have bitten himself on the back?”
