Epiphany

Hannah and I sat in Officer Luke’s office and I worriedly bit my fingernails. Officer Luke was in another room calling our parents. My parents scared me more than Officer Luke did.

I knew they wouldn’t believe our story and slowly sunk farther into the depths of despair. I was just contemplating how to say goodbye to my friends when I was leaving for military school when Hannah’s voice broke through, “We have to think of something. Come on! Amy?”

“There’s nothing we can do.” My voice sounded hoarse and scratchy as I spread fear. “I’ve tried everything. Everything.” My shoulders shook with the tears coursing down my face and I left Amy to herself. She was muttering; all I could hear were broken phrases: ‘Not over yet…’ and ‘That wouldn’t work because…’ Soon she started to cry, too.

I looked up and saw a face through the windows. Two faces. I glared at Michael’s mocking smile and started to give Tony the same face before I saw his expression. He looked at Hannah and almost seemed sad.
