Breaking Free
Shivering with a hand full of confiscated rock CDs and other contraband, Walt sat defeated in his old, rusty Toyota. After being egged by the students in yet another prank he started to wonder why he even wanted to be a teacher. Walt cranked the car up on the 4th try and his self-help tape began to play. He crept his way toward home in evening traffic. He remembered that noone was home waiting for him as he fought through a sea of cars. A road worker accidentally released a wrench into the air and unto Walt’s windshield, shattering it to pieces. Panicked, Walt quickly turned into the nearest exit. He drove for miles while his tape skipped continuously. He was now on the highway. The road outstretched ahead like the dark arm of a shadow. Walt smiled as he ejected the skipping tape and tossed it out the open window along with his badge. He picked up a CD and pressed play while driving fast past the speed limit. He smiled as if not a care in the world – even as the state troopers followed him into the twilight.
