The Funeral
I can remember the funeral so vividly. She was seated afew pews infront of me. Her shimmering blond hair vibrant against the sea of black. Her father’s arm was around her shoulders, his attempt at comforting her.
I wouldn’t let myself look at the coffin. It made my stomach do flip flops, and so I stayed towards the back of the room. I had only come to see her. Her with her radiant smile and twinkling eyes. I had wanted her to be mine for a long time, and maybe now I would have my chance.
“Oh, Jacob,” she sobbed later after the funeral service. “I can’t believe he’s gone.” She fell into my welcoming arms, her slender body meshing to mine so well. I squeezed her to my chest, wishing that she didn’t have to be going through this pain. But it was part of the phase. Soon, she would be over him and I could make my move.
I remember stroking her hair, whispering sweet words of sympathy.
“I don’t know what I’d do without you, Jacob.” She looked up into my eyes. “Andrew thought the world of you.”
