A.I. Lost

“What AI? There’s no AI anywhere in the library system. The smartest thing in there is the search engine, a pretty shallow one, at that. We don’t have a single computer capable of holding one.” The administrator held his face in his hands.
“You’re right, sir, there is no one system that can hold it. But it’s not on one. It’s using all of them. Distributed, very efficient. Doesn’t hog resources, scales down when there’s heavy use by normal users, so I don’t think it’s malicious. However, it is intercepting every bit of data that’s being processed here. It’s making a copy, saving it. Not here, somewhere off site. In…” The technician flipped through a few pages of printouts. “In San Fransisco, actually. A university server.”
“And you’ve called the university, right? What’d they say?”
“Well… see, that’s the thing. They can’t actually find it. It’s on the network, and they can see the traffic, but they have no idea where it is physically.”
A sigh, and the admin’s head sunk down further.
“What can we do?”
