In the Depths

Katie slipped and slid down the cavernous opening beneath her house, holding tightly with one hand to the tentacle that also retreated back into the depths. With her other hand and feet she pushed against the clay and rock in a nearly futile attempt to remain upright and conscious.

She had never dropped this fast before. They must be close.

Eventually, thankfully, she arrived at the bottom, slowed to a graceful stop by the summons tentacle that had guided her descent. She watched as it recoiled and was swallowed by the oily lake. She waved her thanks to the blob that floated lazily on its iridescent surface. It acknowledged her with a stream of bubbles.

While she waited for a guide, she peered upward; dreading to see the lights that would indicate that her house was gone. She felt a tinge a sadness for her parents. This couple had been especially nice to her. She would miss them more than most of the others.

But thankfully, there was nothing but darkness above.

In the dim light, her guide approached.
