Trick or Treat
“Trick or Treat” they called as I came to the door. Ah, but I love this holiday. It’s so very rich in opportunity, so very alive. I looked down at the grinning princess, the fierce pirate and the sullen teenager dressed as a soldier. There are always a few who don’t know when to grow up.
“I believe that you’ve forgotten your half of the bargain.” I reproachfully stated towards the sulking young man.
“Look, just gimme the candy, ‘k?” He proffered his bag. I dropped my delightful jawbreakers into the bags of his friends.
“I believe I have something special for you.” I gestured towards the mammoth bar of chocolate, hanging temptingly over the bubbling cauldron in the back. He sighed, as his friends moved on to easier treats, and started towards the back yard. After a moment, I heard the familiar wet, tearing sound, followed by the splash as his head landed in the pot. I smiled, hummed a cheerful little tune, and went to back to fish the new jawbreaker from the cauldron.
Oh well…more for the children.
