You can fix it by replacing the paired hyphens with an emdash.

To create an emdash, hold down the alt key and hit the numbers 0151 on your keypad.

Also, you can create an ellipse—that is, three periods right next to each other, like so … —by holding Alt and hitting 0133. That saves you two characters.
