The Unexpected

I wandered around in the darkness. I noticed that it wasn’t completely dark. It was as if the sky were stained with dark berry juice. I could see my body, I could make out spindly trees, but I couldn’t see the horizon.

I moved as if through jelly. I had one purpose, to get out. But in this darkness I couldn’t tell which way ‘out’ was. As I neared things they became more distinct, as if I traveled in a heavy purple fog.

I began to feel panic. I began to miss home and family and comfort. A sense of urgency and fear overtook me. I tried to run. I tried to focus more on objects in the distance, looking for an exit. My breathing became labored and my heart pounded. My hearing and vision sharpened. I heard something behind me!

I knew it was close. I knew it was looking for me. It was here the whole time, waiting for me to move. It wants to stop me. I want to scream.

I run and look behind me, run, and look ahead. I can’t see it, I expect evil red eyes and large teeth. I stumble and fall!

I jolt awake.
