Too long, Old friend.
Luckily, he was there when I arrived at the party. You see, I do not like social events. I become somewhat nervous, and end up making a fool of myself. So naturally, seeing he was already here set my mind at rest.
I made my way over to him. “Doctor,” I started, “I’m glad you’re here! How have you been?”
He turned around. The surprise of my being there was obvious on his face. “Good Lord! Hello, Old chum! It’s been a while. Yes, yes I am very well.” He placed the pipe to his lips and inhaled the fumes from the burning tobacco into his lungs. “Tell me, have you met our Host?” He tilted his head upwards and exhaled.
One of our Host’s housestaff made her way through the crowd with a tray of champagne flutes. I relieved her of one and turned back to my old friend. “Only very briefly. We met at a charity bash last weekend where she consequently invited me. However, I wouldn’t say we know one another. When I mentioned your name she simply insisted I come.” I smiled.
It really had been too long.
