Just A Little Sobbing

We headed back, having quiet conversations and enjoying the springtime. Spring break was just four days away. Four more stupid days and we would be free. I stopped in front of her house, looking at it wistfully.
Me: I wish I could come in.
Her: Sorry, Dad wants a family night again.
Her brow furrowed slightly as she thought about that.
I sighed. Me: Goodbye then.
I kissed her lips gently, then released her.
Her (whispering): Bye.
She walked away, opening and closing the front door behind her. I sighed and walked home, wishing I didn’t have to face that stupid English paper due tomorrow. I don’t usually procrastinate this much, but honestly, I didn’t care. I only had half done and no idea what to do for the rest.
I didn’t get very far.
About half-way home my phone buzzed. Cynthia. Well that was fine with me.
I answered it.
She was sobbing.
