Smiling From Ear To Ear
“Whose phone is that?!” my teacher finally noticed.
Nobody spoke, nobody even breathed. I looked around, as if trying to find out who it was, but I could feel the eyes of the rest of the students.
“I got a pocket, got a pocketful of sunshine..” my ringtone went off again, and I knew I was busted.
“Bring it to the front, Melanie.” he commanded with a piercing look in my direction.
It was still ringing as I gave it to him. To my despair, he answered it. My volume was on Very Loud, so I could catch bits and pieces of the conversation. It was Hayden. I tried to hold back my victorious grin, but I couldn’t, and I floated back to my seat. Nobody was working on the test anymore.
I couldn’t hear as well back at my seat. I only heard, “Baby…love…come on…” The teacher’s face was getting angrier and angrier with every word, and I was smiling broader and broader.
“This is Mr. Larrier, who is this?!” he shouted.
He looked at the phone then snapped it shut as Hayden ended the call.
