You Were Where?
“Maybe.”
“Maybe? Thats ur answer? I didnt ask 4 a maybe, Angela, I asked for a yes or no.”
“If u want a yes or no, ask me 3 years ago. Then I would have told you if I went 2 the bar last night or not.”
“For Christs sake, why cant u tell me?”
“Because, Mom, I just cant. I made a promise.”
“2 whom? 2 whom did u promise not 2 tell where you were last night?”
My mom paused, pondering, and then her face lit up w/ terror.
“Oh my gosh, Angela, youre not in a gang, are u? Or-drugs? God, tell me it isnt drugs!”
I rolled my eyes, although this was hardly the time 2 be skeptical.
“No, Mom, Im not in a gang.”
She gasped, looking like she was about 2 faint.
“Or doing drugs.”
Her face, which had been ash white moments before, regained its color. Then it started gaining 2 much color, and it became a deep maroon as she leaned in toward me, her face an inch from my nose.
“I will find out where you were. Dont think I wont. I’ll find out which of your friends youre covering 4.”
& with that, she passed out.
