I love the continuation of the attitude, the line about the colonel being furious they’re missing the lecture. And I thought the personification of Earth worked quite well, like it’s a much-missed friend (referring to last line about ‘Earth wouldn’t console us…’).

I agree with THX , the personification of Earth ratchets up the emotional factor here.
