Tom woke up, rubbing his eyes. His familiar pink living space greeted him. So did the familiar telescreen with the face of Big Sister on it.

“Hello Tom!” Big Sister said cheerfully. “How are you today!”

“Not good,” Tom said, getting dressed in his pink jumpsuit.

“Ohhh, why not, Tom” Big Sister pouted. ” You can tell Big Sister!”

“I had a nightmare, ” Tom replied.

“A bad one, like before.”

“Feel better!” replied Big Sister.

“Your country needs you!”

Tom made no reply to this, only went out the door to begin his daily jog around the city.
