Remembering to be Polite
His mom opened the door, looking confused. I could hear him running down the stairs but it was already to late.
I win, I thought smugly.
“Hi Sharon!” I said brightly, I could see her wondering how on earth I knew her name, “I’m Paige. Drew and I agreed I could come over to study for the English Test… he did tell you didn’t he?” I pretended to read the expression on her face, “Oh, maybe he didn’t.” Drew was standing behind her, his expression furious. I continued, pretending to be unaware of his presence, “Well I am so sorry to intrude. I wouldn’t dream of coming over unannounced. I could come back later if this is a bad time…”
She stared at me incredulously and then exclaimed, “Of course I don’t mind! You’re welcome at any time! Please come in. I just got in, that’s probably why Drew didn’t tell me… Here I’ll make you guys a snack. Do you want to study in the basement?”
Poor woman, she’s totally babbling. I bet she doesn’t get much talking around here.
I followed her, smiling politely.
