They come

With pitter, patter,
slide and thump
hop and flop and shiver,

With slither, slather,
shuffle, sneak
and scoot and walk and wander,

They come from all the corners
all the shadows of the hall
all the hollows and the holes
along the slimy, rotting walls

They come from every crack
in every stone in every wall
they come from every curve
of every street of every town

They’re coming
coming faster
faster, faster by the day
these things that hurt and plague us
are our own bad thoughts
that’s all…
