Ana froze and looked at Janie for help.
“We didn’t want to ruin the…. surprise party we’re throwing you!”
“What surprise party?” Lili and Rachel asked.
“Don’t play dumb, Lili,” Janie said, trying to telepathically get her lie across. “The one for your mom getting married.”
“Why would you throw it for me?” Rachel asked, eyes squinting suspiciously.
“Well, not for you only, for your whole new extended family.”
Ana looked at Janie as if to say, “Really? That’s the best lie you can come up with?”
“Oh, that’s really nice,” Rachel said. “Thanks, guys.” She smiled then went back out to get more boxes.
“What was that?” Evan asked.
“I’ll explain to you later,” Ana said, pulling Evan’s arm. “Let’s finish bringing in the boxes.”
Lili turned to Janie. “So what’s really going on?”
“Yeah, Ana got a date with Evan; they’re going to lunch!”
“Seriously? Score for Ana,” Lili complimented. “Oohh, but Rachel. So that was what the lie was for.”
Janie nodded.
“Okay,” Lili said. “But crap! Now we really have to throw a party.”
