Hi there! I found this story by using the search-by-date feature, mostly due to John Perkin’s “Make Someone’s Day” challenge (at http://ficlets.com/stories/36862). I clipped it last week, because I liked it so much. There’s a sort of “Little Prince” feel to it, so I hope you don’t mind the direction I took it!
