Empathy
By the end of her story,Rachel was disgusted with herself. The look of pity on Chris’ face said she no longer had any chance(as if she even had one to start). And what’s worse, she now had to worry even more about him remembering her.Her face might not be so remarkable, but her pathetic rant about an even more pathetic life definitely would be.
“I’m sorry,” she said, wishing she could take it all back.”Normally, I wouldn’t be this…pathetic.I mean, I don’t know you, and well…this was just the definition of TMI wasn’t it? I promise I’ll stop now,” she said, turning back to stare at the front of the bus and mentally kick herself for being so stupid.
“No,” he said emphatically, his hand on her arm(she jumped as the electric shock ran down her arm again).”Don’t feel bad for having a shitty family. That’s really not your fault.I should know.Honestly,it’s refreshing to hear that there are other families out there as messed up as mine.”
Suddenly, she realized the look in his face wasn’t pity.It was empathy.
