Like many of the boys of my generation, I grew up imagining a future with Winnie Cooper. As the wonder years passed I realized, she was more than a fictional character; she was a pipe-dream.

To most girls, I was the best friend, more often, the little brother. I was the play toy they brought out whenever the guys they really liked were out of the picture. Unrequited love pestered me through my adolescence and into my early adulthood. I thought I’d never find my true love.
