“Is it that obvious?” Jameson replied.

“You look like a fish outta water, hon,” the bartender said. “You must’ve checked your watch nine times since you sat down. But, don’t you worry – Old Bess has calmed many of nervous guys in her day.”

Jameson tried to stifle a smile because this woman had been so wonderful to him, but really, Old Bess? He looked down, his cheeks turning a vibrant crimson.

“Nothing to be embarrassed about, hon,” Old Bess said.

Jameson was relieved that she misinterpreted his blush and awkward smile. “Well, it’s been a rough week, Bess.”

“Old Bess,” she corrected. “Why don’t you tell me about it? It might ease your nerves.”

“Well, Old Bess,” he said with a slight smile. “It’s been a crazy week, a lot of ups and downs, really. One minute I feel like the luckiest man on the planet. The next I feel like the world’s out to get me.”

“Ain’t that life, dearie. Hang in there,” Old Bess said with a wink as Becca walked in. “I can see beautiful things coming your way.”
