Winding Paths

Aurora waved her arm through the steadily-thickening mist. The forest was dense here, and completely unfamiliar. A winding pathway, bordered with smooth river rock, led into the dark. The sky was a deep bruised purple, and she knew night was falling. Where could she go to be safe?

She picked her way carefully along the trail, still trying to remember how she’d gotten here. She remembered laughter, a kiss, a strange device that she couldn’t quite picture… She paused, wondering what had happened to the thing she’d found. It had been an interesting little contraption to be sure, but why did her thoughts keep returning to it? No matter, she had to find a way through this forest.

Her stomach grumbled, and she looked to the sides of the path for signs of anything edible. She felt so hungry, like she hadn’t eaten in days. Her eyes settled on a clump of strawberries, brighter red than any she had seen before. They seemed to glow in the dim, misty shadows of the forest.

She stepped eagerly off the path.
