Gerry leans his head back against the wall as he watches the boys circle each other. They went past bravado five minutes ago, and Gerry waits for them to start swinging at any minute. He exhales and watches the smoke stream out, diffusing the movement that begins in front of him.
Luke slumps next to him, vaguely cheering the two boys on. He’s tired, and hasn’t been sleeping, but the violence is enough to catch his attention. Someone shouts in the distance, and the boys all scatter quickly, leaving Luke and Gerry alone in the alcove they hide in every day.
