Night Patrol (Long Patrol Chapter 1)
“I think we’re too far out,” Jehzi said softly. The other three riders glanced at her. “Being too far out is part of our job description,” replied Ringo. Quills snickered softly; Edge returned to scanning the surroundings. The only sounds besides the clomp of hooves was the whistle of nightbirds and the rustle of wind. “I’m just saying, is all,” Jehzi persisted.
“Look,” Edge said. He turned slightly to face Jehzi, who was sharing his saddle. “We’re Long Patrol. Even if we get lost, we’re still performing our mandate.” Jehzi shrugged. “Just don’t whine to me if we get cut off.”
“Not having fun?” Quills rode Little Red next to the stallion. “Not as such,” Jehzi said. “I think I mentioned that I hate this. I only do it to be with Booger.” She slapped Edge in the back of the head for emphasis.
“Maybe making Long Patrol teams out of couples wasn’t the best idea,” Ringo observed. “Now come on, we only have four more miles.” The other riders tried to stifle their laughter as the squadron rode on into the night.
