Responsibility

Every two days, just after dawn, God accepts the sacrifice of the tribe and gifts them with His manna. Watching from their caves, fearful of the divine wrath, the tribe waits for the body to be carried up to Heaven before venturing onto the desert sand to collect its food.

The tribe has been in the desert for nearly a year now. Their God commanded they wander this bleak expanse, and so they have. They have neither livestock nor crops—they must rely upon their pact with God for everything.

But their God is not merciful, and this desert is a punishment for the past sins of the tribe. He has promised to send the tribe fruit and water, but at a terrible price. Every two days, the tribe gathers to cast lots, to decide who will be sacrificed.

The tribe cannot last through another year of sacrifices. They pray for the mercy of God, but He does not seem to hear.

Jason finishes feeding his ants and heads downstairs for breakfast. He hopes when they all finally die he can convince his parents to buy him a dog.
