The hospital

I stepped into the elevator.
Pushed the button for Floor 3.
The song playing in the backround gave me a sence of familiarity.
It relaxed my weary mind.
So many thoughts running through it at once.
I thought of how stupid we were, and how lucky I had been.
The elevator doors slid open, and I walked into the room I had become so familiar with over the past two weeks.
It was peppermint green, and smelled of latex, and lemon cleaner.
I walked over to the table, and put fresh flowers in the vase to replace the ones from last week.
I looked at the heart moniter, fearing the moment when the peaks would get smaller and smaller, until they became a thick straight line.
I hoped that against all odds he would wake up.
That was what i wanted more than anything, but I watched him slip away.
Every day that I came to see him, I just watched him falling farther and farther, and it was apparent that soon he would be gone.
I kissed his forehead, and walked out. I wasn’t strong enough for this…
