I think this is very well done.
Not entirely sure about this sentence though: “The empty bottle of JD we’d split sat in the middle of our circle, on top was that wooden box…” On top of what? Other than that, great job. The last line is a killer.

@John Perkins: The line in question used to be _”…balanced on top of it was that…” but I had cut it down to fit the character limit. It was tough to make this one stay under for certain.
