I don’t know enough Billy Joel to fully appreciate this. I’m singing “Lullabye” in choir, and it makes me cry because it’s that beautiful, but that’s the only Billy Joel song I know. I apologize.

Might I suggest using italics for the internal dialogue? It conveys to the reader that they are thoughts within your character’s head.
And I really don’t know Billy Joel, so you’ll have to forgive me for not catching on. Is this somehow related to one of his songs?
