Peripheral Evil: Part 13 The Garden

Scott Campbell walked into the house through the backdoor. As he turned to close the door, he froze. He heard his wife singing as she prepared the family meal.

He’d always told her that her voice was borrowed from the angels, but she only sang when she was alone and in deep concentration. He stood perfectly still so that he could listen to her as long as he could.

She was singing one of her new favorites, Creepshow’s The Garden. He could imagine her red curls bouncing as she danced around gathering her ingredients. He smiled and was about to close his eyes when he heard shuffling footsteps coming his way.

Scott turned to see his youngest daughter coming to him with her security blanket dragging behind her. He held a finger to his lips before she could speak and picked her up.

She lay her head on his shoulder and whispered into his ear, “Daddy, Mommy called me the other name today. I think she’s mad.”

Scott felt as if his daughter’s words were liquid nitrogen, freezing the blood within his veins.
