A very dramatic episode, to be sure. But you forgot (or maybe intentionally disregarded) that one thing you know for sure in a first-person story is that the narrator can’t die (at least, not in those stories that aren’t being told by a ghost), because how else would he be narrating what happened? :)

Still, it provided a good entry point. :)
