“A baby, Max. That’s what their big surprise was. My mother is pregnant!”

There was a long pause on the other side of the phone, and for a moment I wasn’t sure if Max was still there. Then, quietly, “Well, congratulations, I guess,” and then a long laugh.

“I can’t believe that, though, really? I mean…your parents are a bit…no offense, but old to be having kids now.”

I sighed, shaking my head. To myself, of course, as Max couldn’t see me through the phone. “Yeah. But they’re really happy. I mean, I haven’t seen them this happy in month, Max.”

I could tell Max was grinning when he spoke again, “Yeah, and I’m sure that you’ll make an amazing big sister.”

“Yeah…I hope so.”
