Sole Witness
I was sitting in bed, letting my imagination go crazy.
Sometimes, that’s a good thing…other times, I think that I might actually scare myself into having a cardiac episode.
I link totally irrelevant sounds to things that might happen.
Just as I huddled underneath the covers, a crash came from downstairs.
It’s just the rabbit… I told myself, turning over to my side.
He did made an awful lot of noise. Besides, it just might be my lovely, creative mind at work again.
I turned over on my back again, blankly staring at the ceiling. I saw a shadow pass outside my balcony, and felt my heart speed up.
It’s just a passing car, I reminded my overactive brain, telling it to settle down.
I put my hands over my chest and tried to get some sleep, but I couldn’t.
Finally, I firmly told my brain that nothing was going on, and it soon shut down and went to sleep.
When I went downstairs the next morning, and the room was entirely trashed.
“Someone broke in!”
And I was the only one who heard him.
