Dark Rising 2

There was no time to get into the holds and secure doors, Rachel shouted to everyone to get down on the ground. Darell took Michelle’s delicate quivering hand into his and crouched with his back up against the wall underneath the window.

It was quiet, then a a half growl, half moan could be heard quickly growing louder and passing by close to the window.
Did the monsters know they were there?

Crouched and laying low in the corridor lit up only by the moonlight shining through the windows. Did the monsters sense fear?

Then it was quiet again, but for a faint sound. Breathing. Michelle was breathing heavy. Darell looked down at Michelle’s tiny body. No, it wasn’t Michelle who was breathing heavy. Then sudden realisation crept over him as he looked at the wide-eyed terror in the eyes of the young boy crouching opposite.
