Crashing
“I have a feeling you should just go home.â? he said. I wanted to but he was acting strange … nice.
“Why?â? I asked.
“Just go home, Kit. Go home and don’t go to the alley at all.â? He didn’t wait for me to reply, just walked away.
Still, I was excited when I entered my house and locked the door, sinking to the floor. I was safe until I opened my eyes. The back porch’s sliding door was locked and closed, but from the front door I could still see Jack standing on the outside. I walked slowly back there.
Idiot! Idiot! Just close the curtains and walk away. But, no. Through the door I yelled. “What do you want, Jack?â?
“I need to talk to you!â? he yelled back.
“No!â?
“It’s important! It’s about … Trey!â? he told me and I opened the door a crack. Hopefully, he was just lying and nothing was wrong with Trey. I mean, he is one of the best liars around and why would he tell the truth to me anyway?
“Well?â?
Jack was whispering now that the door was open. “Trey’s in jail.â? And the world just came crashing down on me.
