Waking Up

It was morning.

He found her on the bed, still crying from the night before. He watched her back rise and fall, then shake with her sobs.

He walked to her slowly, and knelt onto the bed beside her. Slipping his arm around her back, he whispered “Please don’t cry…”

“I can’t…” she sniffled “stop.”

He kissed her head lightly, almost crying himself. “Please…for me?”

She hugged him tightly and cried into his chest.

“It’ll be all right, I promise. We can do it.” he kissed the top of her head and stroked her back softly, a few tears dripping into her dark hair.

He was in his bed, alone, holding a pillow soaked with tears.

“I need you…” he whispered into the phone, barely able to keep himself from crying.

“I know, I need you too.” She was still crying.

“I wish you were here.”

“I just wish we were together…”

“We’ll make it happen, love. I’ll do anything it takes, I love you too much to do anything less.”

“I love you too…”
