Ficlets

Not Worth It

Maryanne flipped her dark hair over her shoulder. “Well…” she drawled, “you guys just don’t do what I want to do at recess…I…er…get bored.”
One of Maryanne’s many excuses. She hadn’t been playing with me, Joelle, Victoria, and Lea at recess for the last…oh, I don’t know, 3 weeks?
“Please, Maryanne,” spat Joelle. “If you wanted to do something else, you could have said it at any time.”
Ugh. I was so tired of fighting! Obviously, no matter how heartbreaking it was to admit, Maryanne didn’t want to be friends anymore.
“You know what, guys? I’m sick of fighting. I don’t want to be friends anymore! I am done with you.”
Maryanne turned her back and stalked off. I suppose she expected Joelle, Victoria, Lea, and I to come, too, and maybe beg forgiveness, but we stayed where we were.
I took deep breath. Some friends just weren’t worth chasing after.
